Jacob's Notes from 5/7

  1. I liked how when you were taking your notes you wrote down questions that you thought of along the way. I thought that your notes were easy to follow and mentioned the important parts about the discussion that we had today. My notes were similar to yours, in terms of the ideas that we wrote down, especially the part about who Gatsby really is and if anyone really knows him and why people are okay with just knowing of him and not who he really is as a person.

  2. I really like the way you ask a question, then write down possible answers to it. I always try to do this, but then get sidetracked, and end up with answers on the top of my page and me attempting to draw arrows to connect the answers to the questions. One difference between our notes is that I just wrote down a lot more about the details of mobility, and how Owl Eyes' car crashes into a ditch, which is the same idea of the Valley of Ashes, and how no one in the Valley of Ashes is going anywhere. I also really like the way you sketched little pictures to help yourself out with the visual aspects of the book, and wrote down all the questions you were wondering.

  3. Your notes represent our class discussion well. One thing I would like to add is about Gatsby as a host. Do you think anyone cares not seeing Gatsby but just knowing of him? More importantly, does Gatsby, himself, care that he is anonymous to the people around even when he is the one providing the fantastical parties? What's the point of Gatsby showing his wealth extravagantly if he gets no personal recognition for it? Does he want or not want the attention? Gatsby is a very contradictory character, which makes him interesting.

  4. Charlie made a good point saying that these notes represented our class discussion well. I also agree with Madi when she said that you wrote down questions and tried to come up with possible answers. This makes for very good mapping of ideas. The arrows that you drew also made it so that you could connect statements from the earlier discussion into the present discussion. Also, you included page numbers from passages that related to ideas written down. Very good job. In addition, your last 2 questions are answered in the very next chapter, proving your questions to be relevant and connectible to the order of events in the book.

  5. I agree with Hannah in terms of you writing down questions that you thought of throughout the discussion. I also really liked your pictures. I have always wanted to draw pictures in my notes because it helps me to remember details, but I never know what is important enough to draw, or even how to express my thoughts through pictures. I think you did a very good job of that in your notes. Although I think your notes are very good, I also agree with Charlie in the sense that the whole idea of Gatsby's guests not actually caring about who he is, is a really big part of our discussion.

  6. I really like the way you draw images of what you read in the text to support your ideas. The questions you write down for the book also allow you to see the text in a certain way. I also think that the arrows connecting ideas and text from the book together is a really good resource for finding evidence for a paper.
