a different purport”(153) This quote shows that despite her life being very
tough, it was only this way for a certain amount of time while the life
Dimmesdale lived was very painful but it went on for much longer than the pain
the Hester suffered when she first wore the A.

Despite the fact that Hester’s life is very tough as a result of the A, she knows that “It lies not in the pleasure of the magistrates to take off this badge” and that if she were “worth to be quit of it, it would fall away of it own nature, or be transformed into something that should speak a different purport”(153). Despite the pain the Hester suffered when she first wore the A, it serves to make her stronger.
